From West to East and How that Happened

Have you ever wondered how the Chinese in America ended up in the East and the South after they first arrived in California? Emerald "Emmi" Dunn-Bahurlot, secretary and community historian for the Chinese Historical Society of Memphis and the Mid-South, researches and archives genealogies of the Chinese community in this area. Join us as Emmi describes the arrival of the first Chinese to America on the west coast and challenges us to consider their unusual migration pattern. She will focus on three aspects in particular:
1.The obstacles and discriminations that faced the Chinese after arriving in America
2. How the1882 Chinese Exclusion Act affected people's lives and changed their status
3. Chinese community life in Memphis and how it developed over the years
Emmi's stories will open up a whole new facet of the search for every family's history and will appeal to genealogist of all ethnicities.
