Nellie Kenyon: Trailblazing Tennessee Journalist
by Tyler Boyd
Starting her career at the Chattanooga News, Kenyon broke down barriers for women in the journalism field. She was the only woman covering the Scopes Trial, where she received Press Pass No. 1. She also helped solve a bank robbery and interviewed Al Capone on his way to prison. Later working for the Nashville Tennessean, she reported on the Georgia Tann adoption scandal in Memphis, a hidden tape recorder under the governor's desk, and both of Jimmy Hoffa's trials here in Tennessee. Her objectivity, work ethic, and professionalism make her a standout role model for anyone today.
