The forgotten and under identified United States Colored Troops (USCT) who arrived in Galveston, TX, June 18, 1865. Who were they and where did they come from? Charting the movement of those troops and their providential arrival that complemented freedom announcement and celebration. They were ordered to proceed to their previous destination. This move to Brazos Santiago, TX includes Pvt. Augustus Spyglass who served in the Indian Wars as a Buffalo Soldier.
Teresa Hill Mays, a native Memphian, with 40 years of experience in research and documentation of the history of families and places. She is a member of the Tennessee Genealogical Society, serving as Multicultural Advisor and on the Program Committee. She is President of the Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society - Memphis and Mid-South Chapter and serves on their National Chapters Committee. Teresa was appointed to the Shelby County Historical Commission as County Genealogist (2022) and elected Vice Chairperson this year. Her interest in researching family began as a young child and today she displays an enthusiastic knowledge and expertise in this field.
